MATTED OR NEGLECTED COAT
Excessive de-matting is a painful, time-consuming and costly procedure that causes extreme discomfort and can aggravate, or cause skin problems. Client is aware that neglect of the pet’s coat can be cause for problems after grooming such as clipper/brush irritation. If Client’s pet does not remain still accidents can happen such as, cuts, nicks, etc. from clippers or scissors. However, it is at Emerald Pet Beauty’s discretion to determine if it is safe for the pet to be de-matted, if not, a “shave-down “of the pets coat will be completed. Shaving your pet may dramatically change your pet’s appearance and the hair will be very close to the skin. This may expose pre-existing skin conditions. Client’s pet will receive a shave down & start over (additional fee for shave down.) Closely shaved pets are also prone to sunburn & should either have sun screen applied daily or should be kept out of the sun until the hair grows sufficiently to protect the skin. In some cases pets may also exhibit brief behavioral changes. In certain breeds & coat types, the coat may not grow back the same. Removing a heavily matted coat includes the risk of nicks, cuts and/or abrasions due to moles, warts or skin folds trapped in the mats. Heavy matting can also trap moisture near the pet’s skin which can cause mold, fungus, bacteria or skin irritations that exist prior to the grooming process. The after-effects of mat removal procedures may include itchiness, skin redness, self-inflicted irritations or abrasions, or failure of hair to re-grow. Client is responsible for the condition of the pet’s coat and will not hold Emerald Pet Beauty responsible in the event of adverse effects of mat removal.
CURRENT VACCINATIONS/VETERINARY INFORMATION
Your pet’s safety is first at Emerald Pet Beauty. We require a current rabies vaccination expiration date before any grooming services will be performed. Proof of Rabies Vaccination shall be provided to Emerald Pet Beauty upon request as well as current Veterinarian information.
SAFETY/DOG BEHAVIOR
Client must inform us prior to grooming if your pet has bitten someone or has aggressive tendencies. Emerald Pet Beauty will not accept any aggressive dog. If false representations about the pet’s behavior were made when asked during booking of an appointment, we will discontinue services and Client will still be responsible for the full grooming charge. Client will be liable for any bites or any property damage caused by their pet(s). For Groomer’s safety as well as your pets, Emerald Pet Beauty has the right to refuse service in the event of a pet that cannot be handled safely. FOR OVERLY AGGRESSIVE OR OVERLY STRESSED PETS, Emerald Pet Beauty WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN YOU AS A CLIENT.

It is the goal of Emerald Pet Beauty to make your pet's grooming experience as stress free as possible.

Undercoat and hair removal becomes necessary when a coat is tangled beyond the ability to brush through it. The most humane method is to shave off this matted hair. Shaving may seem severe, but it is the least stressful and least painful way to groom a matted pet. Cosmetic appearance is secondary at this time. Any other method of hair removal is too painful for your pet in such a condition.

We do not offer full de-matting services, but we do offer partial de-matting services. When possible, we work to de-mat/brush any hair that may be saved, but only when it will not cause excessive pain and suffering to do so. There may be an additional charge for this process ($15 per 15 minutes).

It is fairly common to find pre-existing conditions that become apparent only when the matted coat is removed. Our groomers will always bring anything he/she may notice to the owners attention. Emerald Pet Beauty groomers cannot diagnose conditions but may advise that the owner seek veterinary care for the pet.

Matted coats and mat removal can cause the following problems:
  • As mats get tighter, they eventually pull out of the skin, causing bald spots and sore skin.
  • Mats inhibit proper air circulation to the skin causing increased body heat in these areas. This creates an ideal environment for many skin related health problems (hotspots, bacterial/fungal infections).
  • Skin pulling. This results in chafing and abrasion over time and causes pain when your pet moves.
  • Working so closely to the skin increases the risk for stress, trauma, or injury. All precautions will be taken however, some problems may arise such as nicks or clipper irritation.
  • Mats create an ideal environment for parasites such as fleas & ticks. If either is found, Emerald Pet Beauty will administer a Capstar, following a quick evaluation from our veterinarian ($16).
  • Ear bruising (hematomas) due to excessive head shaking after removal of mats.
  • Sunburn if your dog is kept outside for long periods of time after removal of mats. Prevention of this includes: Pet sunscreen, skin coverage (pet clothes), and reduced time outside from 10AM-3PM.
Emerald Pet Beauty staff will be happy to show you the necessary tools needed and how to care for your pet's coat so that matting does not occur. Your pet must be brushed and combed thoroughly on a regular basis, either by a groomer or yourself at home.

I have read and understand the above. I am aware that my pet has matted hair. Understanding these risks, I authorize Emerald Pet Beauty to proceed with the de-matting process and to shave off any and all matted hair as necessary. I also know that the cut may be shorter than I wish. Should my pet need any veterinary care during or after this process, I agree to pay any and all veterinarian fees.
